The iQFOiL World Championships brought elite windsurfing back to Weymouth and Portland this month, 14 years after the town's waters hosted sailing at the London 2012 Olympics.

A 41-nation field competed over the week at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, with hundreds of athletes, coaches and support staff based in the town for the championship.

Racing finished with a medal-race day watched by hundreds of spectators at a fan zone outside Weymouth Pavilion, where organisers also laid on watersports taster sessions and family activities for local residents.

WPNSA chair Jon Tweedle said the event had let the venue show what it could offer on the world stage. "Coming at the end of an extremely busy season of National Championships and regattas for us, hosting the iQFOiL Worlds has given us the chance to show just how much this place has to give, on the global stage," he said.

He added that the Academy's continued success sets it apart from many former Olympic venues. "It's easy to forget that many former Olympic sports venues lie abandoned and empty, so the fact that WPNSA is thriving, improving and growing year-on-year is a testament to all that have made it what it is, as a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games."
